How to use this reading time calculator

- Read the three time estimates: slow (150 wpm), average (200 wpm) and fast (300 wpm). Most adult readers fall in the average range for general prose.
- Adjust the WPM slider if your audience is different — academic readers may be 100-150, casual scanners may be 400+.

What is the average reading speed?
Adult readers average around 200-250 words per minute for general text. The default here is 200 wpm because that's where most online prose lands. Faster readers (300+ wpm) often skim more than read deeply — useful for blog scanning, not for retention.
What about speaking time?
Average speaking pace is about 130 words per minute for clear, natural speech. The result shows speaking time too — useful for scripts, presentations, podcast estimates and video voiceovers. Faster speeds (160+ wpm) feel rushed; slower (under 100 wpm) feels dragged.
How are words counted?
Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace — the same method most word counters use. Hyphenated terms ('state-of-the-art') count as one word; numbers count as words; URLs count as one word regardless of length.
Should I use the same WPM for blog posts and technical docs?
No. Studies put leisure reading around 250-300 wpm, business prose around 200-250 wpm, and dense technical or academic text closer to 100-150 wpm. If your audience scans rather than reads, the realistic figure is lower than the default. For dev documentation, halve the default — readers stop, re-read, and try code.
Why is the reading time on news sites usually shorter than my estimate?
Many news sites use 265-275 wpm as their baseline — faster than the cautious 200 wpm default here. They also exclude image captions, pull quotes and sidebars from the count, while this tool counts everything in the input. Match the news-site method by trimming captions/sidebars and bumping the WPM to 275.
