Frequently asked questions
What is Flesch reading ease?
Flesch reading ease scores text from 0 (very hard) to 100+ (very easy). 60-70 is plain English; below 30 is college-level.
How is keyword density calculated?
Each keyword count is divided by the total content words (excluding common stop words), shown as a percentage.
How are sentences counted?
Sentences are split on '.', '!' and '?' with common abbreviations like Mr., Dr. and U.S.A. excluded.
Why does this count sometimes differ from Microsoft Word?
Word counts hyphenated phrases like 'state-of-the-art' as one word; most counters split on whitespace and call it four. Google Docs and Pages each have their own rules. Pick one tool and stay with it inside a single document — switching mid-draft is what produces 'mysterious' word-count drift.
